![]() This led to British citizens accepting their king’s assumption of more power, the very power that would cost them their freedom. Ultimately, British citizens valued their own personal gains over the self-sacrifice they would have to endure to profit. The problem, however, was that Great Britain’s monarchy had become corrupt – the very thing that republicanism sought to avoid. Colonists during the early history of republicanism in America would compare the picture they had in mind of an ideal republic with the actual monarchy that was present in Great Britain. American colonists in favor of republicanism were especially influenced by the writings of British philosophers during the early eighteenth century. The history of republicanism in America is actually heavily influenced by the history of British parliament. They believed that they were following their civic duty by separating from Britain for the purposes of preserving the “common good.” The reason why classical republicanism is so prevalent in the Declaration of Independence is because of the colonists’ recognition of the fact that they wanted their government to be vastly different from that of the British parliament. Other natural rights include the right to protect oneself from physical harm, the right to worship as one chooses, the right to express oneself, among others. These rights include such things as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Natural rights (or “unalienable rights”) are those rights that are not dependent on, nor can they be changed by, manmade laws, cultural customs, or the beliefs of any culture or government. Classical Republicanism and Natural RightsĬlassical republicanism promoted the natural rights philosophy, which is echoed in the Declaration of Independence. Classical republicanism was inspired by the writings of such classical philosophers as Aristotle and Cicero. ![]() Its core principle is that the best possible government is one that promotes a “common good” for the benefit of everyone in its society, as opposed to people being motivated by their own self-interests. That is why this system of government can also at times be referred to as “civic humanism.”Ĭlassical republicanism, despite its name, is actually an early theory of democracy. ![]() They have since proposed the usage of the term “early modern republicanism” to describe the system of government that developed during the Renaissance. Modern scholars believe that referring to this system of government is confusing, as the term “classical republicanism” could be interpreted as the system of government that was actually relied on in the ancient world. In a republic, power is given to elected individuals who act on behalf of their citizens, and government leaders rule in accordance with the law.īecause Renaissance scholars referenced ancient world ideals in order to advance what they believed was an ideal government, the form of republicanism that developed during the Renaissance is referred to as “classical republicanism.” Despite being a revamped system, this version of republicanism incorporated ideas from classic systems, hence its name. By the time the Renaissance rolled around, Europe was divided into monarch states and republic states. These states tended to be smaller but wealthier. Republicanism was brought back to life in Europe during the Middle Ages when certain states were leaning more toward the idea of a republican system of government. The definition of republicanism has become complicated, due to the fact that American republicans today interpret its principles quite differently from the republicans who initially created the concept during the days of the Renaissance. ![]() Liberty is considered a fragile thing, and it is up to the nation’s citizens to protect it. Republican citizens believe they must be prepared for any negative influences that could set the nation on a path toward tyranny or a dictatorship. For instance, in modern times, a black person is considered a citizen, whereas in the early days of republicanism, they were not. citizens under republicanism were considered equal, though the definition of “citizen” has been changed throughout the years to mean different things. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You may think you are ready but until you can do the solo exercises with ease and fluency, there will be no point moving on. Work your way slowly through the entire solo practice section before attempting the pair work. You may want to speak the instructions slowly into a tape-recorder, leaving space between each instruction for you to accomplish the set task, and play that as you practice. Always start with the warm-up to make sure you are in reasonably good condition, and to get used to following instructions. Then set aside a time, preferably each day, of at least 30 minutes, but not more than two hours, to go through the basic exercises in order. Though the theory comes first, a full understanding of it is impossible unless you have actually made it work in the exercises likewise, the exercises are unlikely to yield good results if they are not approached with sound theory in mind. To begin your study, read the book through, and decide for yourself whether you want to proceed with the long and laborious (but fun, challenging, rewarding, and ultimately glorious) process of making sense of the exercises and the theory. Ultimately, most people train for the improvement of their physical and mental health (which includes for most people a degree of fantasy enactment), and train because the process itself is rewarding. Just don’t expect the techniques you have seen on the screen to be applicable in reality. It can be helpful at times to get back in touch with why you started training in the first place. Use that fantasy to inspire, but not direct, your training. So if you want to become Sir Lancelot, Aragorn, Luke Skywalker, or Conan the Barbarian, then fine, enjoy. People are motivated to train by a huge variety of stimuli and in my experience, it makes no difference what that initial stimulus was. I have had many excellent instructors in other weapons, and I hope I shall not disgrace them: while I gratefully acknowledge their contribution to my training, they are not responsible for the theory, exercises, and underlying martial philosophy that I teach.īefore you begin, you must establish what your goals are. I must emphasise here that the method contained in these pages is mine, based on my own understanding of swordsmanship, backed up by my research and experience. Instead, it attempts to provide you with the complete grammar, basic vocabulary, and key phrases of the language of longsword fencing. This book is not intended to include every possible longsword technique, and it is not intended to be a recreation of the method of any given historical master. It is assumed that the reader has no training in any martial art, so this book includes everything you need to know about how to train: from a comprehensive warm-up to constructing a training schedule. The history of the weapon, an overview of the historical sources for the method of fencing that I teach, and advice on how to maximise the effectiveness of your practice, are also covered. It is a training manual, containing all the basic theory and technical exercises necessary to get a solid grounding in the use of the longsword. ![]() This book is primarily written for such beginners, to provide them with a solid foundation from which to start making themselves into swordsmen. Discussion threads on various internet fora show that the majority of people interested in this weapon do not have a common language to describe the various actions, nor do they have the kind of basic training that would allow their research into the historical sources to really bear fruit. There are many people beginning the study of Western swordsmanship, particularly with the longsword, who have never been taught the basics of body mechanics, footwork, and fencing principles. ![]() CHAPTER ONE Image Missing Introduction How to use this book ![]() ![]() ![]() So the trade-off might not be even." Allen's (2012) review reported that for many customers, eating in the dark can be "an unsettling experience", in particular the physical process of feeding oneself even though the menu may be adapted to allow for "the diner's limited ability to aim a knife and fork". Before entering, customers choose their meal, often selecting from among several generic menus rather than specific items. In other venues the customers are blindfolded instead. Spielmann says the idea came after guests who had dined blindfolded at his own home reported greater enjoyment of their meal through the senses of taste and smell. All these features make this reel incredibly durable and long-lasting which is great considering its price point. The MGXtreme spinning reel also features Abu Garcia’s corrosion protection (Salt Shield) as well as an internal tripping mechanism which gives a louder thud when closing the bail wire for added security. As for performance, the reel’s AMGearing system provided precise gear feel with each cast or retrieve. The EVA knob is also flat rather than round, which I really appreciated because it provided better control when casting or retrieving. It has a compact bent carbon handle that felt comfortable in my hands even after long days on the water. The MGXtreme spinning reel also has two aluminum spools (one shallow, one more shallow), so I was able to easily switch between different lines depending on the situation. The drag is also adjustable, so you can easily dial in your preferred settings depending on what type of fish you’re targeting. The drag was smooth and consistent throughout the entire range, so I never felt like I was overloading it or losing too much pressure. I was impressed with how well Abu Garcia’s Carbon Matrix drag system worked right out of the box. Additionally, there is also a K-Clutch anti-reverse bearing and two bearings on the line roller to reduce friction and prevent line twisting. The reels come in two sizes, the 20 and the 30, with each one offering a gear ratio of 6.2:1 and an 11-bearing system including 11 stainless steel HPCR bearings and 1 roller bearing for smooth operation. I used a variety of lines, from braid with a leader for plastics to fluorocarbon straight through with hardbodies. I spent the past few months testing the Abu Garcia Revo MGX Spinning Reel in various conditions, from offshore fishing for brim and flatheads to casting for bass in heavy cover. It’s a reliable reel that offers a lot of features and capabilities, so I wanted to see how it would handle in a range of situations. That’s why I was excited to try out Abu Garcia’s Revo MGX Spinning Reel. As a nine-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year and a member of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, I’ve had my fair share of experiences with different fishing gear. Due to the acuity and urgency to stabilize the patient and to minimize bleeding, imaging to document placement could not be performed during the procedure. Once the uterine balloon was determined to be in the appropriate place, the vaginal valve was insufflated under direct visualization. Gentle traction insured that the uterine balloon of the Cook catheter was securely positioned above the internal os after insufflation. Positioning of the Cook Balloon was ascertained by visual inspection and by gentle traction. Upon insufflation, the cervix was compressed between the two balloons of the catheter and hemostasis was rapidly achieved (Figures (Figures3 3 and and4). 80 mL of normal saline was inserted in the uterine valve and 60 mL of normal saline inserted in was introduced into the vaginal valve. A silicone double balloon cervical ripening catheter (Cook Cervical Ripening Balloon) was introduced into the cervical canal (Figures (Figures1 1 and and2). After curettage, the patient continued to actively hemorrhage. Dilation and suction curettage was performed in order to excise the remaining trophoblast tissue that was readily visualized at the cervical os. After removal of vaginal packing, approximately 500 mL of additional vaginal bleeding was noted. At the time of the patient's presentation to emergency room, interventional radiology was not readily available to perform uterine artery embolization. The vaginal vault was packed with gauze in an attempt to tamponade bleeding so that patient could be safely transported to the operating room for an examination under anesthesia. On examination, approximately 300 mL of blood was cleared from the vaginal vault. The patient returned to the emergency room two days after discharge with heavy vaginal bleeding.
